Olympic Workshops for Schools!
Why not have an Olympic Opening Ceremony in Your School?
Having an Olympic sporting event? Finding it difficult to engage other subject departments and the Arts within your Olympic Celebration? Then why not organise your own opening ceremony with Bangdrum CIC. Our Olympic Carnival Workshop will bring your event to life in ways that students and teachers find irresistible.
What’s it all about?
With over 15 years of carnival arts experience working alongside companies and artists actually helping to develop the Olympic ceremony for London 2012, Bangdrum can help your school create an Olympic celebration with a difference. We can work with a class of 30 or even your whole school to put together a carnival arts production to represent the Olympic theme. Using visual arts, textiles, music and dance choreographies we will create a mobile or static carnival celebration to open up your sports activities to a wowed audience. Using set or devised themes around the Olympic games the whole school will become the curators, directors and cast of a multicultural, cross art form, cross curricula production.
How does it work?
Working as a group we will understand the theme of the ‘Olympics’ and start to devise and discuss possible themes for our carnival. This could be as simple as the colours of the Olympic rings or the Olympic Values – Respect, Excellence, Friendship, Courage, Determination, Inspiration and Equality. Using these ideas, students will split off into several groups working on each discipline of the production. This could be visual arts, dance, drumming, voice, theatre, sports skills, circus skills or even utilising performance groups you already have in school such as steel pan bands, brass ensembles or rock groups. Each group will work with one of our experienced carnival artists to develop their part of the show. Towards the end of the day the groups will come back together for a mass rehearsal in preparation for the big show.
The Big Show
The Opening Ceremony (or maybe the finale) will follow a narrative developed during the day based on the themes identified. Depending on how many young people and art forms you choose to work with will dictate the scale and length of the final production. The Idea of this production is also to engage the audience and make them feel part of the celebrations. Our experienced team will help to weave the narrative and direction to include audience and teachers within the production helping your school to engage with your local community on a new level.
